ABOUT NZ BUILDERS

NZ Builders is a team of carpenters from around the world, who bring unique and collaborative expertise to each project, resulting in some of the most innovative and architecturally stunning homes on Vancouver Island and surrounding areas.

New Zealand-born Damon Gray founded NZ Builders in 2004 after spending more than two decades building in his home country, the US, and Canada. After renovating countless homes that had been damaged due to mould and rot in damp climates like the pacific northwest, Damon began to develop and employ more sustainable building practices that would prioritize long-term durability and energy efficiency.

NZ Builders works with designers and architects that share our enthusiasm for building sustainable, high-performance homes that challenge traditional norms and break new ground in building science. We have built solid relationships with sub-trades and industry professionals who align with our values and deliver the same level of quality that our clients have come to expect from our team.

WE HAVE EXPERIENCE BUILDING TO A RANGE OF CERTIFICATIONS INCLUDING PASSIVE HOUSE, NET ZERO, AND BUILT GREEN.

WHAT WE DO

CUSTOM HOMES
We work together with your design team to create the plan for your dream home that meets your specific needs, budget, and timeline. If you’re just getting started, we are happy to connect you with an architect, designer, and real estate team that we’ll work closely with to ensure a seamless process.
RENOVATIONS
Let’s face it–living on an island means space is limited. If you love your property, but your home needs improvements, let’s create a plan to improve the health, performance, and durability of your existing home. There are circumstances where the damage is too great and a renovation is not feasible, or environmentally ethical. We accept renovation projects on a case-by-case basis.
CONCRETE TILT-UP
NZ Builders is one of the first construction companies to introduce tilt-up Concrete Insulated Panel (CIP) homes to Canada. Developed in Germany, the technology has become popular in many countries because of its minimal environmental impact, and high durability. When designed intentionally, CIP homes can use solar energy to naturally heat and cool your home, producing a comfortable, consistent temperature and reducing energy costs.
MAINTENANCE
We pride ourselves in building low-maintenance homes that allow you to spend less time fixing, and more time, well, living. But the key to keeping a low-maintenance home in top shape is to know how to take care of it. We provide our clients with the information they need to ensure longevity, and we also provide ongoing maintenance packages as an additional service.

OUR VALUES

SUSTAINABILITY
We build homes that last, and our emphasis on durability dramatically reduces their environmental footprint. Our clients value sustainability, and choose passive solar design, rain water harvesting, reclaimed and upcycled materials, healthy air ventilation systems, and other features that reduce their overall environmental impact. We source materials locally wherever possible, and we work with a recycling company to ensure responsible disposal of any waste.
HEALTH
Everybody deserves to live in a healthy home. We employ building practices and materials that are resistant to common west coast climate culprits such as rot and mold, and we use high-end air ventilation systems that improve air quality. We build homes that are designed to enhance the overall health and wellbeing of the homeowners and surrounding communities.
GROWTH
Our workplace is robust with training and continuing education options, and we encourage our team to pursue professional and personal development opportunities by offering a learning allowance for all of our employees, regardless of position. We provide a clear career path and ongoing mentorship for our staff.

OUR TEAM

Building a custom home requires more than just high-level craftsmanship and carpentry skills–it’s who we are that makes us truly unique.

We may be biased, but we think we’ve assembled a pretty top-notch group of humans.

WORKING WITH US

We build cool sh*t, and we don’t take ourselves too seriously.

Many of our team have been with us since the start, which speaks for itself. We take on projects that are unique and different, and that push the envelope when it comes to building science. If you’re on our team, be prepared to challenge yourself and grow your craft with each project.

While it makes sense to have a tiered leadership structure in any construction company, we operate with an “all hands” mentality–we’re all here to help each other succeed, and nobody is above getting their hands dirty.

Want to work with us? We’re always accepting resumes. Send yours to info@nzbuilders.com.
